Hello and welcome to my new blog!

I am starting to get lots of questions about who I am and why I decided to start my portrait business, so I thought this was the perfect time to start a blog.

My name is Ruth and I am a photographer.

I am determined to be too young for a mid-life crisis, but calling it a third-life crisis makes it sound as though I have the first two already! I think I will just adopt the hyped-up media ‘millennial approach’ of having several different careers, so before I tell you about this one I will just briefly share the first with you. My first career was as a research scientist; I started out donning my lab coat and safety goggles for a few years, then progressed to working with people in clinical trials. I worked all over the UK on all types of rare and common conditions.

Then 16 months ago, my daughter arrived and during the sleepless nights I thought about all the things I wanted for her. I want her to believe in herself, and that she can achieve anything she sets her mind too (and about 1000 more things besides!). I realised it was one thing to say these things to her, but it was another to be a good role model, so as scary as it is to start something new, I have decided to take the plunge and officially declare myself as a photographer after years of training and working towards my goal.

Officially my style is ‘painterly’ or ‘fine art’ but I like my friend’s description of ‘your photos look like the opposite of Instagram’ much better. I aim to create timeless photos that will look elegant in your home, and I am always acquiring new dresses or props for my latest ideas. I love to get to know people before I start shooting, so there is always a kettle on in the background and there is never a rush during the session.

I would love to welcome you into our home for a photo session, so if you like my style just drop me a line and I will get the kettle on!
